The Academy of Sciences of Albania presented the "Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language" at the 20th International Seminar on Albanology.
The Academy of Sciences of Albania participated in the 20th International Seminar on Albanology, organized by the University of Tetova, featuring the presentation of the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” (FMGJSH) and participation in the Pan-Albanian Academic Book Fair.
Prior to the seminar, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Academician Skënder Gjinushi—accompanied by the FMGJSH drafting team (Academician Valter Memisha, Prof. Dr. Anila Kananaj, and Prof. Dr. Shezai Rrokaj)—was received by the Rector of the University of Tetova, Prof. Dr. Kushtrim Ahmeti. Also present at the official reception were the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Driton Sulejmani, and the seminar director, Prof. Dr. Berton Sulejmani, who also serves as the Dean of the university’s Faculty of Philology.
During the meeting, Academician Gjinushi thanked the Rector for the cooperation in realizing major projects of the Academy of Sciences, particularly the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” and the “Albanian Encyclopedia.” He subsequently briefed the Rector and the representatives of the University of Tetova on the current progress of three major projects: the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language,” the “Albanian Encyclopedia,” and the “History of the Albanians.” Within the framework of these relations, the President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo (ASHSH) invited the Rector of the University of Tetova to engage in future collaborations—ranging from scientific research projects and studies to joint publications.
At the opening of the plenary session, Prof. Dr. Kushtrim Mehmeti welcomed the opportunity to launch the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language,” emphasizing that there is no event more significant for an Albanology seminar than the presentation of an Albanian dictionary.
On this occasion, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Academician Skënder Gjinushi, presented the work accomplished on the Academy’s major projects, emphasizing institutional cooperation and its importance in successfully developing the three projects.
Subsequently, Academician Valter Memisha—Scientific Secretary of the *Fjalori i Madh i Gjuhës Shqipe* (FMGJSH) and co-leader of the drafting project—presented the principles and new methods used to compile this monumental work.
Furthermore, the project’s deputy editor-in-chief, Prof. Dr. Shezai Rrokaj, discussed the informative and documentary functions of the FMGJSH lexicon, as well as its normative role.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Anila Kananaj, the project coordinator, presented the online platform for the “Great Dictionary of the Albanian Language” (FMGJSH), outlining the various ways to access its wealth of content via the website and explaining how the public—or any interested individual—can use it.
